MyMzansi RoadTrip

We gave students across South Africa the chance to win a seat on the STA Travel MyMzansi Roadtrip, in partnership with South African Tourism and Baz Bus. Wits, Tuks, UKZN, and Rhodes campus winners each won a 4 day, 3 night segment of the 16 day MyMzansi Roadtrip. Student winners stayed in unique accommodations and partook in some incredible activities across South Africa, most of which are detailed below!

GAUTENG

The MyMzansi Roadtrip kicked off in Gauteng... ‘the place of gold’, the perfect combination of rich history, vast countrysides, bustling cities, world-class entertainment and superb urban spaces; undoubtedly a buzzing melting pot of experiences. Here's a few suggestions on where to stay and what to do in Gauteng!

GAUTENG ACCOMMODATION

Stayed at Once in Joburg, in Braamfontein, an All Star Hostel, providing that same fun and vibrant atmosphere as Once in Cape Town. Braamfontein is the cultural and student hub of Johannesburg. Located close to Wits University, Constitution Hill, the Civic Centre and Newton. Not to mention the best Retail Stores, Restaurants, Breweries, Coffee Shops, Bars and Clubs.

GAUTENG ACTIVITIES

Stayed close to town and Hop-on-Hop-off the Big Red Bus! The City Sightseeing Bus gives you the opportunity to see all there is to see in the country's capital! Or get out of town and take a Baz Bus tour and spend 4 days game viewing in the Kruger National Park and surrounds. The tour also covers the picturesque Mpumalanga area, a stop off to view the Three Rondawels and the Blyde River Canyon!

THE DRAKENSBERG

The Drakensberg mountain range is known for it's splendour! This mountain range, famous for it's hikes to Tugela Falls, and the picturesque ''Ampitheatre'' was stop no.2 on the MyMzansi Roadtrip and for all the right reasons!

DRAKENSBERG ACCOMMODATION

Ampitheatre Backpackers was our second stop on the MyMzansi Roadtrip! With a climbing wall and jacuzzi in the bar there really was no better place to stay in the Drakensberg mountains region! Stay at Ampitheatre Backpackers, in a luxury tent, dormitory room or plush private room and wake up to a view of the 'The Ampitheatre', the most renowned georgrahic feature of the Northern Drakensberg!

Stay at Ampitheatre Backpackers and you'll have the choice of epic hikes and unique local experiences! With organised hike departures to Tugela Falls, known for being one of the tallest waterfalls in the world to day trips to the Kingdom of Lesotho, a landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa!

KWAZULU NATAL

Next was KwaZulu Natal... The realm of the legendary Zulu kings is a magnet for any outdoor enthusiast or thrill seeker. It also offers a unique blend of sophistication, cultural diversity and excitement… all in the most breathtaking setting imaginable.

ACCOMMODATION IN KWAZULU NATAL

Our recommendation on where to stay in KwaZulu Natal, and was where our MyMzansi roadtrip winners stayed, the Curiocity Backpackers Durban. Curiocity, housed in the historic 1930 British-Colonial Style building is centrally located, just a walk from popular destinations like the beach front, Durban International Convention Center (DICC) & Warwick Junction.

ACTIVITIES IN KWAZULU NATAL

The Big Rush Big Swing has been officially named the world’s tallest swing by the Guinness Book of Records since 14 May 2011. Not your average swing, the aptly named Big Swing allows you to take the thrilling leap swinging out into a massive 220m arc where you soar into the centre of the stadium.

EASTERN CAPE

South Africa’s ‘wild’ province, the Eastern Cape features expanses of untouched beach, bush and forest. This was Nelson Mandela’s home province, and is an area with some enticing attractions – among them the Addo Elephant National Park, with the densest elephant population in the world; the dramatic Wild Coast; and, of course, Mandela’s home at Qunu.

There's no better place to stay in Coffee Bay than the Coffee Shack Backpackers, it's right on the beach! And, if you're travelling down the Wild Coast to Cintsa be sure to make a stop at Buccaneers Backpackers, situated in a lush indigenous landscape overlooking the beach and lagoon! Heading to Port Elizabeth? Stay at Lungile Backackers who offer a unique walking tour of this historical city!

ACTIVITIES IN THE EASTERN CAPE

With the help of Coffee Shack Backpackers we joined an organised hike to the ''Hole in the Wall'', one of the region's most beautiful nature features. Further down the Eastern Cape in Cintsa you'll find various organised beach activities, from surfing to beach volleyball to canoeing, all available at Buccaneers Backpackers. Make a stop at Lungile Backpackers in PE and walk their city tour!

WESTERN CAPE

Renowned for its soaring mountains, golden beaches, sprawling vineyards, adrenaline adventures, and beautiful people, it’s understandable why The Cape is the perfect destination all year round!

WESTERN CAPE ACCOMMODATION

First stop in the Western Cape was in Jeffrey's Bay, one of the most popular beaches. We stayed at Island Vibe Backpackers, with a 270 degree beach view, voted ''Best Beach Experience in SA!''. Next stop was Plettenberg Bay, spending a night or two at Amakaya Backpackers before driving through to the Tsitsikamma National Park for outdoor activities. Staying at Wild Spirit Backpackers is a must!

WESTERN CAPE ACTIVITES

If you're staying at Island Vibe Backpackers in Jeffrey's Bay be sure to get involved in some of the activities they offer, from horse-riding to sandboarding, to sup paddle boarding. Keen for something more adventurerous? Go kloofing or canyoning with Africanyon or experience the highest bridge bungy jump with Face Adrenaline! A hike in nature's Valley is also not too missed!

CAPE TOWN

Our MyMzansi RoadTrip finished in the city of Cape Town! Cape Town, the capital city of the Western Cape is one of the most visited cities in the world. It is home to one of the most significant tourist attractions in South Africa, Table Mountain, and boasts the renowned Waterfront Harbour.

Ending your road trip in the city of Cape Town? Cape Town! Although our MyMzansi RoadTrip winners didn't travel as far as Cape Town make sure you add the city into the end of your Roadtrip! Take a Baz Bus Cape Peninsula Day Tour or hop-on-hop-off the City Sightseeing Cape Town bus to experience the inner city and surrounding areas! Or book a Shark Cage Dive with Marine Dynamics and  face the Great White Shark!
